One of the many benefits to being a journalism student is gaining access to events and creating amazing experiences I wouldn’t have had otherwise.
This includes getting a free press pass worth $700 to a Kane Brown concert.
Let me rewind and explain how I came across this opportunity…
I go to school at Lehigh University. An amazing school, I love everything about it- except the somewhat desolate town around it. It’s not a place where you would expect a multi-platinum, 3X AMA award-winning artist to perform.
However, on March 1, Kane Brown made Allentown’s PPL center a stop on his Worldwide Beautiful Tour with opening acts by Chris Lane and Russell Dickerson.
The center reached out to Lehigh’s student-run publication, The Brown and White, with free press passes to cover the concert. Originally, only two tickets were offered. One reporter pass and one photographer pass. My friend and I didn’t want to miss out on the chance to cover a live concert. Although we were both writers for the paper, we managed to get two multimedia passes to create video coverage of the concert.
The reporter who wrote the article was seated not only with a great view, but next to Kane Brown’s mother. The photographer, my multimedia partner, and I knew we would be close to the stage, but we didn’t know how close. We were stunned when we were directed to an area in front of the first row where we could touch the stage.
As the artists performed, we got clear shots of them making direct eye contact to our cameras. It was unreal capturing the moment while being caught in the haze of fog flowing off the stage and hearing the music from the band’s instruments and artists’ microphones perfectly.
I still can’t believe I had this opportunity, and moments like these remind me why I love being a journalism student. I can’t wait to see what other events I attend, people I meet and assignments I cover in the next two years.
I’m excited for what a future in journalism has in store for me 🙂
